Ok,
I'm a total furrie newbie. But I really want to explore the scene and need guidance. Where to begin? How to connect with other furries? Fur suits? How and where?
Believe it or not, I didn't find too much good info on the net.
I'm so excited about getting into this, but I'm so far from the action.

Re: Furrie Newbie
Thu, July 13, 2006 - 12:42 PMhuh? there's a scene?lawl. Well, i guess there's kinda, sorta a scene. Somewhere. Perhaps Pennsylvania. I typically don't congregate with many of the furries that are local. I know a handful of them, and we'll see each other at parties and whatnot. There's an annual furry convention in San Jose called Further Confusion (furtherconfusion.org/ ) that is pretty fun, and occasionally we will get together and do a geurilla (gorilla) fur bar (pub-crawl).
There's also a fuckton of stuff online. Lots of LiveJournal communities, fursuit.org, furbid for acutions, furrymuck for role-play... oh, the list goes on.
Also, the term "furry" is pretty much all-encompassing, including sub-groups such as fursuiters, artists, writers, plushies, pawpeteers... and so on.

Re: Furrie Newbie
Thu, July 13, 2006 - 4:36 PMEh, I live in Berkeley, and compared to the SouthBay, there's no one up here. But I still get some social time with 'em. There's *always* some furry local to you, but furries are just as diverse as normal people although there seem to be some common tendencies for a large chunk of them.
There *is* a mailing list called BAF (Bay Area Furries), which I'm not subscribed to, but apparently get a lot of activities and plans going. "Furry" events aren't really furry, per se... they are just a bunch of people who congregate together, segregate into their own little clicks and do their own thing.
There's a monthly meet in San Francisco, there's weekly meets in Santa Clara (University Chicken, right next to the university). If you look hard enough, there's *always* some kind of weekend get together, just like normal people do. It just so happens to be that the people going are furry. You just gotta find those who you are most compatible with.
Don't stress if it doesn't happen immediately... as with all people, things *usually* take time, unless you're very socially adept. Over time, you'll find your niche, or you'll move on. Livejournal seems to be the most common blog thing for furries, as oposed to myspace, tribe, or something else.
As will all fan groups (furry is no different), there's fanatics, there's casuals, there's lifestylers, and there's the predators. There's a lot of people in the bay area, and I'm sure with patience, you'll find a group you'll fit right in with =3
Good luck!

Fri, July 14, 2006 - 10:03 AMThanks for all your input.
I'm interested in meeting other furries (vs. LJ or online discussion forum).
I get the sense, based on your responses, that it isn't a very cohesive community.

Re: Furrie Newbie
Fri, July 14, 2006 - 12:40 PMHi Max,
I also got your private im, and been meaning to email you back. There is a mailing list called "Bay Area Furs", which usually is pretty active, but is currently down as if it doesn't exist (been on the list for years, and never seen that happen). When it is back up, I will email you with the link to subscribe to that list.
For sure, the term furry is a loose word, that means different things to different people. There is a strong furry community in the bay area, mostly down in the south bay and in the suburbs. But as a wise man once told me, anyone who claims to have created a community, has really just started another clique.
This is just my observation and opinion, but I kinda notice two different things going on furry-wise in the bay area. First, you have people who often don't identify as furry's, but just love dressing up in costumes, wearing faux fur, doing animal themes, and you'll often find them at events like the bunny anon salon or running from animal control at burning man. They do it because they think it is fun and interesting, and a part of the bohemian counter-culture that is strong in the bay area.
Then you have the furry's who will only have friends who are furry's, who live to go to furry coffee's and furry munches, and go to furry conventions around the country. While some like to fursuit, most don't, and the same goes for the art. One could say they are furry's because they were often outcasts with few friends, until they found this little furry clique - i mean community - and suddenly they have friends, and a life. So for them, the furry lifestyle is strong. Although in my opinion, they are missing out alot in life, because there is a whole world out there to travel to (other than just cons), and by only having friends who are furry's, you are missing out on the other 99.9999% of the human race, many of whom are wonderful and exciting people.
To be a furry, you simply have to call yourself a furry. While some people may argue differently, you don't ever have to go to any furry convention, or furry coffee, or even have any furry friends to be a furry yourself. You just have to identify with the concept however it means to you.
But on the same token, I personally like to call people furry who would never identify as one themself. Mostly because of the negative perception that furry's often have. For example, I love to call some of my bunny friends furries, simply because they dress up in fursuits more often than any furry's i know, but simply have no interest in conventions, and think (often wrongly), that to a real furry, fursuiting is a fetish done for sexual pleasure, and not for fun and art as they enjoy doing it...
So to answer your question, how to meet furs, it really depends on what furry means to you and what direction you want to go. (myself, I have friends on both sides, I help throw an easter party that is fursuit/animal costume mandatory, where we get 500 people in fursuit, maybe 2 of which might call themselves furs, but I also am getting involved in helping out with the production of the second largest furry convention in the US, very few of which any of the furs that go to that con would ever go to a bunny party... Talk about a cultural - i mean clique - divide...) -

How can one claim to be a furry if they never fursuit? -
-
Re: Furrie Newbie
Mon, July 17, 2006 - 11:52 AMNot all furries are fursuiters. Some like to draw furry stuffs, some like to make furry thingies, some wear over-sized wolf screeenprinted t-shirts and mope around. -

Re: Furrie Newbie
Mon, July 17, 2006 - 5:26 PMThat's the point.
You are not a furry because you like to fursuit. You may not even like anthropomorphic art. Or anthropomorphic writing.
You are a furry because you identify as a furry (you could say you are a furry because you say so.).
Of course, if you want a membership card, you can always paypal me $100, and I'll make you one. -

Mon, July 17, 2006 - 6:58 PMso what you're saying is...that...
furrie is a state of mind?

Re: Furrie Newbie
Mon, July 17, 2006 - 7:09 PMEven broader than that.
Furry is whatever you define it to be because the definitions vary too much.
A state of mind, a lifestyle, a hobby, an interest, a religious outlet, or just art, for example.
And btw, I don't know much about the monthly SF meets other than they happen once a month. The person you want to contact is M Tiger, who is in charge of setting these things up. I'll privately message you his contact information,
